Applications like Skype have a feature where they stay minimized on the task bar when they are closed, and I accidentally close office a lot of times, because of the fact that the close button closes the application, and has the be restarted again. I'm not a huge tech genius, and have tried downloading a .dll file called KeepOutlookRunning.dll from the internet, which was a add-in in Office 2016 (or other office versions). When trying to put up the add in, I got an error message, which stated " is not a valid Office add-in". I have tried installing it by opening the options windows, and then going to the add-ins tab, selecting manage: COM Add-ins, and trying to add it by clicking the add button. I did do this in administrator mode by the way. Is there any solution to the problem? I would also appreciate any other ways to get the window minimized when the close button is clicked.
That's actually not the full story. Skype and other applications did redefine the function of the close button (red X), but this didnot replace the minimize buttion ( _ ). Whereas in the old days most programs in Windows could only either be mimimized or closed completely, a new option has emerged throughout the years. These days, three essentially different ways of getting rid of a program screen are all used quite often:1. Minimize ( _ button): stop showing the program window on the desktop, application keeps running and is available as a large button on the task bar.

3: Minimize to tray ( _ or X depending on the program): stop showing the program windowand the large task bar button, but the application keeps running. Often used for programs that are supposed to keep running but cluttering the task bar would not be necessary as you don't need to open the application all too often (e.g. I don't randomly open my mailbox all the time so I don't need the big button but I do want to get notifications for new e-mails).
A solution similar to what you can do in Thunderbird so that when you either minimize or hit the red X on Outlook, it doesn't close the program but rather closes the windows and keeps an icon on the taskbar.
For me, the X and the minimise button perform the same action. When "Hide When Minimised" is unchecked both buttons will minimise to the taskbar. When it is checked both buttons will close it to only the small icon in the tray by the clock.

Go to the system tray and open the overflow menu of icons. You will see an Outlook icon there. If Outlook is busy, you may see a different type of icon e.g. an icon with two envelopes to indicate messages are being sent/received, or something else based on what the app is doing. Right-click the blue Outlook icon, or if you see some other icon, right-click that one.
I'd like to propose a new feature: closing or minimizing the main Edge window optionally removes the taskbar element and minimizes the browser to the tray area. My usage scenario often contains multiple pinned tabs with single page applications that I infrequently check for updates (some of them also have notifications). I would like to clean up my task bar by moving some of the applications to the system tray since I am not actively using them. Another use case would be watching a video in picture-in-picture mode, where the browser window is not needed any more to be visible.
From time to time Microsoft Outlook adopts quite an annoying habit to hang around even if the user persistently attempts to shut it down. Technically, it means that one or more outlook.exe processes would stay in memory preventing the Outlook application from closing correctly and not letting us, users, start a new Outlook instance. This problem existed in earlier versions and it may occur with recent Outlook 2013 and 2010.
To start Outlook in Safe mode, click on its icon holding the Ctrl key, or enter outlook.exe /safe in the command line. You'll see a message asking you to confirm that you really want to start Outlook in Safe mode, click Yes.
First off, you need to close Outlook otherwise Inbox Repair won't start. Then open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE14 folder if you are using Outlook 2010. If you have Outlook 2013 installed, it will be C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE15.

Let Outlook auto-archive or synchronize without interruptionSince we've started to talk about archiving, be aware that Outlook consumes even more resources than usually when it is archiving your emails or synchronizing messages and contacts with your mobile device, which results in a bigger response time. Don't push it and let it finish the job :) Usually, Outlook displays a special icon on its status bar or on the Windows system tray when auto-archiving or synchronization is in progress. Don't take any actions in Outlook during this period and you'll be safe.
my outlook works fine but keeps freezing everytime i try view attachments from mail and also if I try add attach file to new mail.what could be the cause of this? and what can I do to fix it? please help
Just A simple Process :1) Press Window Button and 'R' Key together, as to open the Run Command Box.2) Enter "outlook /safe" exactly in the same pattern in the command box.3) Outlook Will open in the safe mode without freezing.4) Delete the Malware/ Infected Mail and Viola, Your Outlook is free. It will start working in the same as before.This is one way I found out to resolve this problem. If any of you find some other better option, please let me know for better understanding.
Safe mode isn't working for me at all. I close Outlook yesterday and today it won't start. It only appears in Task Manager as a process, but not on screen. Safe mode does the same thing. I tried repair too and it made no difference.
every day at some point I get a message "the data file outlook 2010 was not closed properly.the file is being checked for problems" then it can take 30 min to 8 hours to go back on...help please

Hello, i have a pc with outlook 2010 installed however i bought a new lap top and on it was installed outlook 2007. i was trying to put in the same info as the 2010 but its not allowing me to log in...it would search and search and then kick me out. also ak me if i wanted to start in safe mode..i also get error that cant open your default email folder & i dont understand. Can you help i just wants infor to be working on my new pc. my new pc is windows 7 installed on it is outlook 2007.

Hello.I have a problem where when I go into my email, Outlook only shows a couple of emails and files and has (PREVIEW) next to outlook name. Therefore I cannot do anything with the page at all??I am with hotmail and usually goes to live.com and then my email would come up and no problems.
